Asked to Work During a Workplace Visit? Separate Observation from Trial Work

A workplace visit can help you understand a job, but being asked to carry out tasks raises different questions. Before attending, clarify whether you will only observe or whether any activity is being treated as work, training or selection.

The link opens TGP's free job-consultation registration form for people living in Japan. It asks for details including your name, contact information, date of birth, current location, residence status and job preferences. Complete the required fields accurately and review the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before submitting.

What to establish first

The name of the event does not determine whether an activity is labour. What you actually do, including whether you follow instructions and perform productive tasks, matters. A visitor label or an unpaid arrangement does not remove residence-status restrictions. Do not start work while permission for that work remains unclear.

Your confirmation sheet

ItemQuestion to confirmKeep this record
ActivitiesWill I watch, practise, or perform actual tasks? An agenda with specific activities
ConditionsIf work is involved, what pay and employment terms apply?A written explanation from the employer
Permission and safetyIs the activity permitted, and who handles safety?Confirmation before the activity starts

What to do next

  1. Ask for the visit agenda before making travel arrangements.
  2. If tasks are added on the day, pause and ask what they involve before agreeing.
  3. If residence permission is unresolved, consult the appropriate professional before performing the work.

A question you can use

Is this visit observation only? If you want me to perform tasks, please explain the conditions and confirm that I may legally do them.

Avoid this assumption

Do not assume that a short task, unpaid trial or mandatory pre-employment training is automatically outside labour or immigration rules. Equally, a simple visit does not itself mean you have been hired.

Questions and answers

Is unpaid trial work always allowed?

No. Whether it is labour and whether your residence status permits it require separate checks.

Can I agree to a visit before the job is decided?

You can discuss a visit, but confirm its scope and avoid starting work without the necessary checks.

Is job consultation with TGP free?

Job consultation and placement are free for jobseekers. Tree's residence applications are separate services with separate fees; support arrangements and other necessary expenses must be confirmed individually.

TGP provides job placement for foreign residents already living in Japan. We do not currently arrange recruitment from overseas or job placement in the construction sector.
